Golf: Beginner Golf Clubs

June 20, 2008 – 2:05 pm

Finding a set of beginner golf clubs is not as complicated as many beginning golfers think it might be. The fact is there is a lot of hype in the golf equipment market. In the beginning, there are only a couple of factors to consider that make any real difference. As you improve your golf game, subtle differences in club design can have more of an impact.

To start with, the most important aspects to keep in mind are club weight and length. Especially for children, club weight should be light enough to swing comfortably but paying twice the price for graphite shafts is not necessary. Until you learn to hit the ball consistently with minimal slice or hook, the materials will be of secondary importance.

Beginner golf clubs should be of standard length. Golf stores and online golf information sites will usually have tables to match your height and arm length to an appropriate shaft length. Longer clubs do yield more distance but they are also more difficult to hit correctly. They can increase frustration more than distance.

How to View Beginner Golf Clubs
Beginner golf clubs are best seen as training wheels. When you first learn to play golf, your main concerns should be proper technique. Even club selection takes a back seat for a while. In fact many beginner sets do not even include the longer irons. After a few golf lessons and many rounds of play, you can make more discerning decisions about a new set of clubs.
